A tragic train crash in the southern state of Oaxaca has claimed the lives of at least 13 people, an incident sure to fuel censure from critics regarding the speed and execution of the country's major infrastructure initiatives.
The crash occurred on the Interoceanic Corridor train, a line developed to join the Atlantic and Pacific Ocean across the thinnest stretch of the Isthmus of Tehuantepec. This initiative was created to provide an different freight railway path to the Panama Canal, aimed at driving economic development in the area.
“We will meticulously determine what caused this incident,” stated the head of state.
The official reported that, of the some 250 people on board, another 98 were injured, with five of those in critical condition. The official added plans to visit Oaxaca to speak with those involved.
Flagship Project of Past Leadership
The Interoceanic Train was a central development scheme of the immediate past president, whose term concluded the previous year. This project was a hallmark of his leadership's economic vision for the southeastern region.
Another multi-billion dollar railway undertaking from that period, a tourist and cargo loop around the Yucatán Peninsula, was also integral to the comprehensive effort to kickstart the economic fortunes of a relatively disadvantaged part of the country.
Building Management and Safety Concerns
The building of both railway systems was overseen by the army, marking a notable increase of its responsibilities in national works. They were executed at an fast-tracked pace, beating forecasts to be partially launched before the end of that government.
However, this fast-paced schedule had also fueled ongoing apprehensions over construction quality.
- Sunday's derailment was the third such incident on the Interoceanic Train in the current year.
- This involves an prior accident this month when a train hit a truck at a level crossing.
- The other major rail project has also had a couple of non-fatal derailments.
Demands for Review and Suspension
In the aftermath of the disaster, the leader of a major opposition party urged an immediate pause in the construction and operation of all similar projects.
This halt was suggested pending a full technical review. The party emphasized that the loss of life "demands immediate answers."
In reply, the head of state asserted that the train had been functioning in full accordance with all security protocols. Assurances were given that the government would be "responsible" in both the construction and running of these national projects.
