Seven individuals accused of being the left-wing extremist organization Antifa Ost went on trial on this week, accused for attacks targeting rightwing extremists that earned them the nickname “Hammer Gang”.
International terrorist designation and prosecution case
Recently, the United States classified Antifa Ost as a terrorist organization together with multiple additional European far-left and anarchist groups.
German prosecutors claim the network was responsible for attacks on sites in the country and Hungary from 2018 through 2023. Included in the allegations is the repeated targeting of a business proprietor in central Thuringia, whose venue was known as a meeting point for far-right supporters.
Some suspects are allegedly accused of using hammers against suspected far-right members, causing several with serious injuries.
Court proceedings and international connections
Court proceedings involving six men and one woman is scheduled to continue until mid-2026 in the eastern city of Dresden, Germany. Two defendants, named as Johann G. and Paul M, also face charges for violent incidents in the Hungarian capital during February 2023, around an annual event called the “day of honor” that attracts far-right participants from throughout the continent.
Separately, another German activist, Maja T, is facing trial in the Hungarian judicial system for multiple charges of attempted assault against far-right activists prior to the same rally in 2023.
Regional context and group hierarchy
Eastern Germany has historically served as a hotbed for both right-wing extremist and anti-immigration youth groups, as well as the often militant anti-fascist networks that oppose them.
Prosecutors describe Johann G as a high-ranking member within Antifa Ost, responsible for organizing violent acts and recruiting accomplices.
Together with Paul M., he is alleged to have arranged training sessions where leftwing extremists practised combat techniques and rehearsed attacks. In storage facilities overseen by the suspect, the group allegedly accumulated tools, irritant sprays, disguises and communication devices.
Previous convictions and international reactions
A different activist previously active with the group, Lina E., became a cause celebre within certain radical left communities following her 2023 guilty verdict for attacks on suspected right-wing individuals.
America's terrorist listing makes group members ineligible to enter the United States, blocks financial holdings they may have within the American economy and criminalizes offering assistance to them.
The German right-wing Alternative for Germany welcomed the US decision and urged the German administration to take similar action. However, the German foreign ministry merely commented it had “taken note” of the US designation.
“The danger posed by the [Antifa Ost] group has substantially diminished lately. The ringleaders and particularly violent members have received convictions or are in custody.”
